Energy Management Plan

Public agencies play an important role in helping Ontario meet its conservation targets and reduce GHG emissions. The province's Long-Term Energy Plan (LTEP) has set a conservation target of 30 terawatt hours (TWh) in 2032. This is equivalent to more than all the power used by the City of Toronto in 2012. Public agencies can play an important role in meeting this target.

Energy reporting and conservation planning will also help public agencies:

  • Identify best practices and energy-saving opportunities
  • Evaluate results by comparing to similar facilities across the province
  • Assist in setting goals by providing a benchmark; and,
  • Measure improvement over time.

Energy reporting will also inform the Ontario government about energy use by public agencies. The information will help Ontario to develop and improve policies and programs in the future.

By July 1, 2013, public agencies must report their energy consumption data annually.  In 2013 they must report on the 2011 calendar year data, and then annually thereafter.

Public agencies will need to develop five-year energy CDM plans starting July 1, 2014. Plans must be updated every five years beginning in 2019.
