Public input being sought with respect to the Recreation Master Plan

Posted on Thursday September 15, 2016

The County of Brant is planning for the future of parks and recreation and is inviting the community to take part in a discussion about parks and recreation facilities and services. A master planning process has been initiated to provide future direction and identify priorities for parks and recreation facilities and recreational programs and services. The County has retained the consulting team of GSP Group Inc. and FJ Galloway Associates Inc. to coordinate the process and create the Master Plan.

Currently, the County’s Community Services Department manages over 50 park and recreation facility locations. These locations provide a range of indoor and outdoor public amenities and facilities such as arenas, community centres, playgrounds, sports fields and splash pads.

The County is expected to see continued population growth, with forecasts predicting a population increase of more than 50% over the next 20 years. The Recreation Master Plan will provide a strategy to assist with meeting the needs of the current and future population by guiding investments in parks and recreation facilities. Opportunities for sports tourism, partnerships and new funding approaches will also be reviewed in preparing the Master Plan.

Community consultation is an important part of the Master Plan process. There will be several ways to provide feedback, including focus groups with local organizations, community workshop sessions, an online survey, as well as opportunities to comment by email, telephone or mail.

An invitation is being extended to specific park users and community organizations to provide input through focus group sessions to be held on September 27, 2016 at the Brant Sports Complex and on September 28, 2016 at the Burford Community Centre.

Interested organizations should contact Joanne DaCosta at joanne.dacosta@brant.ca to register for these sessions.

An online survey will be launched in later September of 2016, and a community workshop will be held at the Brant Sports Complex on October 6, 2016 at 6:30 pm for the public to provide input to the development of the Master Plan. Opportunities to provide input will be advertised in advance. Information about the Master Plan and consultation events will be posted on the County’s website.

Questions or comments may be directed to Stacey Ellins, Acting Director of Community Relations at stacey.ellins@brant.ca or by calling the Community Services Office at 519-442-1818.
