FAQ: Building Permit, Property & Inspection Related Questions

When do I need a building permit?
No person shall construct or demolish a building or cause a building to be constructed or demolished unless a permit has been issued by the Chief Building Official.

Do I need a building permit for - a shed, porch, addition, garage, pool, etc.? How much does a building permit cost?
Yes, all new building construction generally requires that a building permit be obtained prior to the commencement of construction. If a permit is not required after our review of your application you shall be notified and allowed to proceed.

I already have a permit and require inspection. Who do I contact?
Inspections can be arranged with Community & Development Services Department, Building Division. You must book your inspections 24 hours in advance.

I have a complaint or problem with a neighbouring property such as grading of the property or flooding from the neighbour's property?
You will be required to make a formal complaint by contacting the Building Division to ask for an Action Request. If the problem is not in our jurisdiction, we will guide you in the proper direction.

The porch, brick, wall, roof etc., of this building looks like it is ready to fall down. Who do I talk to?

Accessory buildings: Can my neighbour put up a shed?
Your neighbour may have the right to construct a shed provided they comply with the Building and Planning Division requirements.
