Municipal Hazardous and Special Waste (MHSW) FAQ (also known as Household Hazardous Waste)
What is classified as Household Hazardous Waste? Are there alternatives
to these products?
Household Hazardous Wastes are materials that contribute to the strengths and volumes of landfill
leachate. Some examples are paint, used oils, household cleaning products, solvents, thinners,
herbicides, pesticides, batteries, flourescent light bulbs and ballasts and mercury thermometers.
These materials should not be disposed of in your household garbage. New products are being
introduced into the market place regularly, which may provide similar results in a safer and more
environmentally responsible formulation. The manufacturers disopsal instructions should always be
followed.
Where is the Household Hazardous Waste Depot?
The County of Brant offers residents the opportunity to dispose of MHSW materials through a specific one-day collection event rather than a permanent
depot. Once the specific event details are finalized, residents will be notified through newspaper ads and on the County website, "public notices" page.
Is asbestos included as accepted waste?
Asbestos is accepted for disposal under the conditions specified in the Environmental Protection
Act and its revised regulations. The Public Works Department should be contacted for further
information.
Who do I report illegal dumping and accidental spills to a sewer or storm sewer to?
Illegal dumping incidents should be reported to the Public Works Department at 519-449-2451. If a
spill is being reported, the Ministry of the Environment must be notified by calling the Spills Action
Center at 1-800-268-6060.
