Carbon Monoxide Detectors
What is carbon monoxide?
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a poisonous gas that is colourless, odourless and tasteless. It is known as the "silent killer". When burning fuels like natural gas, propane, heating oils, coal and wood that are not completely combusted, they cause carbon monoxide gas.
The Carbon Monoxide Bylaw (PDF) requires owners of homes to install a carbon monoxide detector.
Property owners must
- Install a minimum of one carbon monoxide detector per dwelling unit
- Maintain carbon monoxide detectors in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions
- Do not disable a carbon monoxide detector to make it inoperable as this is against the law
Where to install carbon monoxide detectors
Carbon monoxide detectors must be installed adjacent to each sleeping area. If you have questions regarding carbon monoxide detectors, please contact the County of Brant Fire Department.
All carbon monoxide detectors must have
- An alarm that can be heard from all bedrooms
- An indicator that the device is in operating condition
Visit the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs webpage for more information on carbon monoxide and ways you can reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning in your home.
