Accessibility Recognition Awards

Nominate an organization, facility, program or event that made accessible updates/renovations, built a new facility or created an accessible program or event within the County of Brant!

Event: Accessibility Recognition Awards

Each year, the County of Brant recognizes both existing and renovated structures, community programs and events within the municipality that have excelled to provide community members and visitors a barrier-free experience. Media partners are welcome to the Accessibility Recognition Awards event.

Accessible Entrance

How to make an entrance accessible:

  • Entrances that are accessible to people using wheelchairs or scooters
  • Canopies or other sheltering devices have adequate headroom
  • Power assisted door operators or can be easily opened with one hand
  • Visitors can easily find information, a reception counter, and an accessible call bell or information phone for persons requesting assistance

Multiple Floors (if applicable)

How to make multiple floors accessible:

  • Elevator doorways are wide enough and stay open long enough to allow persons using wheelchairs or scooters to pass through easily
  • In accessible elevators, Braille signage and controls can be easily reached and a two-way emergency call system or telephone and audible signals announce floors and up/down direction of elevator cars

Public Washrooms

How to make washrooms accessible:

An accessible stall should be provided for each sex when integrated into regular washrooms or an accessible stand-alone unisex washroom is located nearby. The following features are accessible to people with disabilities:

  • grab bars
  • lowered coat hooks
  • flush controls
  • wash basins
  • toilet paper dispenser
  • call button for emergencies
  • mounted automatic hand dryers or paper towel holders
  • lever-handled faucets or automatic faucets.

Sidewalks, Roads and Parking Areas 

How to make sidewalks, roads and parking areas accessible

  • Accessible pedestrian route(s) or path(s) are wide enough to accommodate wheelchairs, scooters, or other mobility devices
  • Curb cuts or ramps are wide enough for wheelchairs and scooters and ramps have a non-slip finish and are kept clear of snow and ice in winter weather.
  • Routes are not obstructed by poles, plants, bicycle racks etc.
  • Accessible entrances and parking spaces are clearly marked with the International Symbol of Accessibility.
  • Accessible passenger loading zone accommodates taxis, buses, or accessible vehicles.
  • On exterior steps, forward edges are highly colour contrasted for easy visibility,
  • On both sides of ramps or exterior stairs, continuous handrails are bright contrasting colour and have horizontal or vertical rails to prevent people from slipping.
  • There is a safe, clearly marked, accessible pedestrian route from the designated parking area to an accessible building entrance or elevator lobby.
