Our official plan describes our local policies on how land in the community should be used. It is prepared with input from citizens to help ensure that future planning and development meets everyone's needs.

What is the purpose of an Official Plan ?

An official plan deals with land-use issues such as:

  • Where new housing, industry, offices and shops should go
  • What services like roads, watermains, sewers, parks and schools will be needed
  • When and in what order parts of the community will grow

The official plan:

  • Tells the public what the municipality's land-use planning policies are
  • Ensures growth is coordinated and meets the community's needs
  • Helps members of the community understand how land can be used now and in future
  • Plans where roads, watermains, sewers, garbage dumps, parks and other services should go
  • Provides framework for setting local regulations and standards like the size of lots/ heights of buildings
  • Provides framework for settling conflicting land uses to meet local/ provincial interests
  • Shows your council's commitment to planning the growth of the community
