Bath and Water Friendly Play Dough Recipe

1/4 cup Bubble Bath – I like to use a more natural product with no additional scents (we add essential oils to create our own scents), but you can use your favourite bubble bath. Just pick one that makes lots of bubbles!

1/2 – 3/4 cup Corn Starch (varies slightly based on your bubble bath type)

1 tsp Coconut Oil – You can substitute sweet almond oil or grape oil, but we always have coconut oil in the house, so that’s the easiest for us. You can also leave out the oil if you wish, and simply increase the bubble bath a bit. It is so dry where we live, the oil really helps my son’s skin. It also gives the play dough a much smoother, silkier feel.

Essential Oils – optional, it depends if your bubble bath is scented already

Colouring – optional, but fun!

In a bowl mix together the bubble bath, essential oils and add the colouring (if you want uniform colour or leave it until later for a marble effect). Melt the coconut oil in the microwave if it’s solid, then add that to the bowl.

Finally, add the corn starch. Start with 1/2 cup and mix it in, if it doesn’t pull together add another 1/4 cup of corn starch and continue mixing. As you mix it will pull together into a nice, solid ball. Start kneading with your hands to really mix it all in. This is a great activity for the kids to do.

There may be some extra corn starch left in the bowl, that is fine. Simply discard it.

If you wanted the marble effect, add the colouring now to your bubble bath play dough, or leave it creamy white for a beautiful, natural finish.

Store in an air tight container and use within a week. We found it started to dry out and pull apart after a a few days. Of course, once you are in the bath and getting it wet, you don’t notice that anymore.

How To Use Homemade Bubble Bath For Kids

To use simply give your child about a tablespoon sized ball of the playdough bubble bath to play with in the bath. Holding it under the water will help create more bubbles.

You can also use it in sensory play, as part of a water table, for your kids to use when cleaning toys like Lego or figurines.

The making of this DIY playdough is also a fantastic sensory experience and fine motor strengthening activity.

Outdoor Sensory Motor Scavenger Hunt

https://theinspiredtreehouse.com/activities-for-kids-sensory-motor-scavenger-hunt/

What you’ll need:

-Outdoor Sensory Motor Scavenger Hunt Printable (fill out the form below with your first name and email address)

-pencils or crayons

What to do:

Print the scavenger hunt list, round up your little ones, and head outside!  Give everyone a pencil or crayon to bring along so they can mark off the things they have found.

The kids will notice right away that this isn’t just any old scavenger hunt.  Rather than just finding and collecting items on a list, they’ll have to find the listed objects and perform a variety of gross motor tasks.

They’ll use all of their senses, looking, touching, and maybe even getting a little messy along the way.  Who will be the first one to find everything on the list?

How to change it up:

-Make it a photo scavenger hunt!  Take a picture of your child performing each activity and pictures of each of the items they found to complete the list.

-Make it a team effort – have two groups competing against each other to find everything on the list!

 Exercises on the Mat

Download printable exercises here.

Lying Down:

1.)    Constructive Rest:  Begin by lying down on the mat, arms and legs stretched out.  Close your eyes and breathe in and out through your nose until you feel quiet and centred.

2.)    Lower Back Stretch:  Hug both knees into your chest; rock gently from side to side

3.)    Upper Body Stretch:  With knees bent and feet on the mat, stretch both arms up to the ceiling and lower them down behind your head.  Feel the upper half of the body lengthen.

4.)    Full Body Stretch:  Stretch one leg out on the mat and reach into your heel.  Raise both arms to the ceiling and lower them down behind your head.  Switch legs and repeat.

5.)    Lower Back Stretch:  Hug both knees into your chest; move the knees around together in small circles; reverse direction

6.)    Gentle Twist:  With feet on the mat and knees together, slowly lower both knees to the right; keep the arms out wide on the floor at shoulder level.  Bring knees back to centre, and repeat on the left side.

All Fours:

7.)    Body Movement:  Come to hands and knees on the mat and circle your body to the left, starting small and gradually making the circles bigger; repeat, circling to the right

8.)    Spine Stretch:  On all fours, tilt the hips up towards the ceiling, lift your chest and look upwards; then, round your back and look towards your belly button.  Repeat a few times.

Sitting:

9.)   Side Bends:  sit cross-legged (if possible, or extend legs out in front of you).  Rest your palms on the mat on either side of you.  Reach your right arm up to the ceiling, then over to your left as you bend left from the waist.  Repeat on the other side.

10)  Hip Stretch:  sit cross-legged and rest your palms on the mat in front of you.  Slide forward any amount and take a few breaths in this position.  Cross the legs the other way, and slide your hands forward again.

11)  Neck Stretch:  sit tall and gently pull the belly button towards your spine.  Tilt your head to the right, with the right ear moving towards the right shoulder; hold and breathe.  Repeat to the left side.

12)  Wrist Movement:  make loose fists with both hands and gently rotate from the wrists in both directions

13)  Energizing Breath:  as you inhale, reach both arms overhead; as you exhale, reach arms out wide and lower to the mat; repeat a few times and notice how you feel!

1.)     Bicep Curls:  Stand tall with your belly button gently pulling in towards your spine.  Hold a weight in each hand, arms by your side, palms facing away from your body.  Slowly curl your hands up towards your upper arms, bending at the elbows.  Just as slowly, lower the hands back down.

2.)    Tricep Pushbacks:  Lean forward slightly, and engage the abdominal muscles by pulling the belly button in.  With arms at your sides, bend your elbows and keep the arms tucked into your sides.  (Think of a chicken wing!)  Slowly push the hands back until the arms are extended, then bring the weights back to the starting position.  Move with control, and keep the upper arms still.

3.)    Shoulder Press:  Hold the weights and bring the hands to or near your shoulders.  Press up and slightly forward until your arms are extended overhead, then pull the weights back to the starting position.

4.)    Chest Press:  Hold your arms out at shoulder level, fully extended.  Make a 90 degree angle by bending at the elbow (weights are now aimed at ceiling).  Press the arms in towards centre, trying to touch the forearms together.  Then push the arms back out to the starting position.

5.)    Side Bends:  Standing tall, strongly pull your belly button towards your spine.  Your arms are resting at your sides as you hold your weights.  Bend sideways from the waist, as you reach one arm down the leg, toward your knee.  Pull back up to centre, then repeat on the other side.

6.)    Tricep Boxing:  Bring both hands in front of you, with elbows bent.  Make small, quick punching motions in front of you, then start punching up towards the ceiling.  Alternate between punching in front, and punching upwards.

7.)    Side Arm Raises:  Stand tall and engage abdominal muscles.  Slightly bend each elbow as the arms hang by your sides.  Raise one extended arm up to shoulder level, then lower.  Repeat on the other side.  Perhaps try raising both arms out to the sides at the same time.

8.)    Dead Lift:  Stand tall and rest the weights on the front of your legs.  Inhale and pull the belly button in; exhale and bend forward from the waist, keeping the back flat.  The weights lower towards the floor.  Carefully straighten up and squeeze the buttocks.

 Yoga and Gardening

Yoga and Gardening

There are so many things to love about working in your garden, from the sunshine and fresh air, to the excitement of watching plants and flowers thrive!  Be sure to protect yourself from common gardening injuries, like sore backs and knees; lifting and twisting; and repetitive physical activity with some tips below:

Stay –Safe Gardening:

  • Warm up with gentle stretches; be sure to change position and stretch during and after
  • Take frequent breaks and stay hydrated
  • Be aware of your posture
  • Always engage your abdominals to protect your back by pulling your belly button in and upwards
  • When digging with hand tools, lean forward over the tool to use your upper body weight to push the tool into the soil.  Don’t stab at the soil putting strain on your wrist and elbow.
  • Wear shoes with good support and solid soles – floppy footwear accounts for a large percentage of gardening related injuries.
  • Wear a broad-rimmed hat to protect your face and eyes from the sun, and apply sunscreen.
  • Good quality gloves provide dexterity and protect your hands.
  • Always bend your knees and squat to grab hold of anything heavy you will be lifting.  Straighten your legs to lift; never lift with your back.  (ourgardengang.tripod.com)

To relax the tendons in your palm and fingers:  Spread fingers apart as much as you can, keeping them as straight as possible.  Keeping them spread, make circles with your thumbs.  Then touch your thumb to each finger in turn.

 Yoga and Walking

If you’re looking for a simple way to boost your mental and emotional health, check out this encouraging information:

A recent study measured brain health in “couch potato”/sedentary participants before and after a regular program of walking and yoga.

Those in the walking group showed increased brain activity and scored better on cognitive tests than participants who stretched and toned alone.  Those in the yoga group noted greater improvement in their mood and level of anxiety than the walkers.  (psychcentral.com)

So, whether you’re walking, practicing yoga, or doing both, you’re doing much to improve your mind and your mood!
