40 Km/h neighbourhood zones
The County of Brant is implementing a 40 km/h speed limit in select neighbourhood zones over the next three years as part of the Brant Safe Streets Strategy and in alignment with the Transportation Master Plan.

This initiative supports safer streets in residential areas - particularly those near schools, seniors’ facilities, and pedestrian zones - and responds to ongoing concerns about vehicle speeds and traffic safety.

Key Highlights:

  • All County roads adjacent to schools already have a 40 km/h speed limit in place.
  • The 40 km/h neighbourhood speed zones will be rolled out across approximately 45 designated areas from 2025 to 2027.
  • The program will begin in 2025 with high-priority neighbourhoods that see significant senior and student pedestrian activity.
  • Gateway signage will be installed at neighbourhood entrances to clearly mark the speed zones.
  • The changes are supported by Bill 65 (Safer School Zones Act), which allows municipalities to reduce speed limits in designated residential areas.

Why 40 km/h?

  • Lower speed limits in residential areas:
  • Reduce the severity of collisions
  • Improve pedestrian safety
  • Support active and connected communities

Timeline:

  • 2025: First 15% of neighbourhoods
  • 2026: Additional 35%
  • 2027: Remaining 50%

This phased approach allows for monitoring and community feedback each year.
