Frequently Asked Questions - Barnes Dance Intersection

Did you know?
The County of Brant has a “Barnes Dance” intersection located at Grand River St. N, and William St. downtown Paris. This type of intersection helps pedestrians safely move through the downtown.
How does it work?
A ‘Barnes Dance’ intersection temporarily stops all vehicular traffic and allows pedestrians to cross an intersection in every direction, including diagonally, at the same time. It was first used in Canada in the late 1940s. In recent years, its benefits for pedestrian safety has led to new examples being installed in many countries around the world.
How do I use it?
Pedestrians must press the pushbutton and wait for the walk display to appear before they begin their crossing in any direction. When pedestrians have the right of way, vehicles may not turn right on a red light. Signage is also located at the intersection.
Enjoy the day and stay safe Brant! ☀️
