National Day for Truth and Reconciliation - September 30, 2024

Back to Search
National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in the County of Brant

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, observed on September 30, is a vital moment for Canadians to reflect on the painful history of residential schools and their lasting impact on Indigenous communities. It is a day to honor the resilience of survivors and remember the children who never returned home. This day also offers an opportunity to educate ourselves, acknowledge the injustices of the past, and commit to the ongoing work of healing and reconciliation. By listening, learning, and taking action, we can support meaningful change and foster stronger relationships with Indigenous peoples in the spirit of unity and respect.

Orange Shirt Day, simultaneously held on September 30, is a powerful symbol of the experiences of Indigenous children who were forced to attend residential schools in Canada. It began as a way to honor the story of Phyllis Webstad, a survivor whose new orange shirt was taken from her on her first day at a residential school. The shirt, meant to symbolize her excitement for school, was replaced with a uniform, representing the loss of identity, culture, and dignity that many children endured. Wearing an orange shirt on this day is an act of remembrance and solidarity, acknowledging the ongoing impact of residential schools and affirming the commitment to healing and reconciliation. It reminds us that every child matters and calls for a united effort to ensure such injustices are never repeated.

On September 23, the County of Brant raised the Truth and Reconciliation flag outside the Council Chambers in Paris, marking the start of Truth and Reconciliation Week. In a further show of support, Penman’s Dam in Paris will be illuminated in orange, serving as a visible tribute to the survivors of residential schools and a reminder of the ongoing commitment to reconciliation.
