Year of the Garden

The first day of spring, March 20, 2022, was the official launch for the Year of The Garden. This year-long celebration of Canada's rich horticulture history is to learn, celebrate and inspire others to garden.

Council chose to showcase Canadian pride with the theme “Plant Red”.

Let's celebrate the Year of the Garden 2022 with initiatives and community partnerships taking place throughout the year including:

Brant Garden Tour

Residents, businesses and community groups will have the opportunity to submit their address to be added to a Brant Garden Tour map, where residents will be encouraged to view at their own leisure.

Special events

Flag raising

On June 17, a Year of the Garden flag was raised outside council chambers to show support for the national celebration.

Year of the Garden event

On June 18, South Dumfries Community Centre hosted a family-friendly garden event to mark National Garden Day. Community partners included County of Brant Public Library, Equal Ground Community Gardens, St. George Garden Club, Paris Horticulture Society and Glen Morris Horticultural Society.

Local garden clubs and groups

St. George Garden Group

The St. George Garden Club is excited to celebrate 101 years as an active club in the St. George community. Founded as a way to encourage and promote gardening for pleasure and for food, the club continues to offer monthly meetings with guest speakers, activities, and flower competitions, planting and maintaining the planters on Main Street and the Anniversary Garden at the Community Centre, as well as taking part in many community events.

Our club promotes gardening for all ages and abilities. Involving youth in gardening is a perfect way to inspire the next generation to respect and care for our planet. It teaches them the importance of diversity, of how we are all linked together and how much change just one person can achieve.

Glen Morris Horticultural Society

The Glen Morris Horticultural Society (GMHS) is a member of the Ontario Horticultural Association (OHA) and is one of twenty-one clubs in Carolinian District 6. We are an informal, social group interested in sharing ideas and learning about good gardening practices while protecting the natural world around us. See planned initiatives below:

June - This month's special activity is to “Spot the Garden Art” that has been placed in every Community Garden in Glen Morris. Participants are invited to identify the garden décor and where it is located. Those who identified all décor will be named in the July Garden Gleanings Newsletter.

July - Take a picture of red flowers in a flowerbed or planter at your home. The top 3 pictures will be featured in the August Garden Gleanings Newsletter.

August - Take a picture of a red vegetable that you have grown in your garden. The top 3 pictures will be featured in the September Garden Gleanings Newsletter.

September - Take a picture of a red preserve that you made in 2022 and include the recipe. Recipes will be judged and the top 3 winners will be featured in the October Garden Gleanings Newsletter.
