Trees on and next to County of Brant highways are regulated and maintained through our tree maintenance bylaw.
See the full tree maintenance bylaw for details.
Under this bylaw, only the public works department can administer/supervise:
- Management and necessary removal of trees on county highways
- Planting trees on road allowances
- Trimming trees planted on a highway, or on private property where the branches extend over the highway
- Removing decayed or dangerous trees
Except in an emergency, owners of land adjacent to a tree scheduled for removal are given written notice 10 days before the removal.
You cannot plant, remove or injure trees located on a highway without approval. You may be fined, charged and/or required to pay all expenses to repair or remove a tree, or to plant a replacement tree.
Our tree conservation bylaw regulates destruction or injury of trees in wood lots larger than 0.49 acres.
