Welcome to Brant Active School Travel. This webpage will provide you with information on safe routes to school, drop-zone areas, crossing guard locations and more to ensure children in the County of Brant have the opportunities to live active, safe and healthy lifestyles.
Ontario Active School Travel is a national program that promotes any form of human-powered, non-motorized transportation to get a person to and from school. This can include walking, biking, scootering, skateboarding and rollerblading to school or to the bus. With the help of Student Transportation Services Brant Haldimand Norfolk (STSBHN) and Brant County Public Health, elementary schools in Brant are promoting Active School Travel as an accessible and affordable opportunity to incorporate physical activity into the daily lives of students.
Benefits of Active School Travel:
Healthier Students |
Active School Travel allows school-aged children the chance to participate in moderate to intense physical activity. This is linked with lower body mass index and improved cardiovascular health. Physical activity also supports healthy brain development which can lead to better mental health and improved academic performance. |
Healthier Communities |
Reducing the number of children being driven to school improves air quality and reduces associated risks of lung and cardiovascular diseases. Increased Active School Travel also supports Ontario's greenhouse gas reduction target of 30 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030 (Made-in-Ontario Environment Plan) by reducing vehicle emissions. |
Safer School Zones |
Reducing traffic volume at bell times creates safer school zones for all students. Improving walking and cycling routes to school enhances the safety, connectivity and quality of life for the community as a whole. |

Project Background: |
Through the Ontario Active School Travel Fund of Green Communities Canada we have introduced School Travel Planning in Brant. Alongside our partners, the City of Brantford, Grand Erie District School Board & Brant County Health Unit, the Brantford-Brant Active Transportation for Schools (BATS) committee will work together to consolidate and build momentum around current initiatives. The committee will also foster a longer-term commitment to support walking and cycling to school including signing an AST charter. BATS has identified 6 elementary school sites that will be the focus of enhanced AST initiatives as identified by their communities.
