Important Update re: Resuming Water Meter Installations in Paris and St. George

On March 18, 2020, due to the risk of COVID-19, the water meter installation program in Paris and St. George was temporarily suspended for the health and well-being of the community.

As of July 20, 2020, the water meter replacement program will recommence.

The County of Brant has been working closely with Neptune Technology Group on an implementation plan for the recommencement of the Water Meter Replacement Program. County staff have recently met with our contractor, Neptune Technologies Group, to review their COVID-19 safety protocols for the recommencement of the program.  County staff are confident in the safety measures that Neptune Technologies Group have put in place for the safety of County of Brant residents and their technicians. To that end, Neptune Technologies Group will, or have started to re-engage Paris and St. George property owners for those properties which have not had their water meters changed in 2019 and early this year as part of this program. Please note, Cainsville, Mount Pleasant and Oakhill areas will be contacted in the fall to commence their change out program.

As a reminder, there is no cost to the property owner with respect to this Water Meter Replacement Program. Neptune Technologies Group have, or will be in the near future booking appointments for this work. County staff ask that residents cooperate with Neptune Technology Group’s call center and technicians, to allow for this work to complete. Please direct any safety concerns, or special needs to Neptune Technologies Group so they are aware in advance of your appointment. Neptune Technology Group will be starting to book appointments for installation for the week of July 20, 2020.

The County of Brant appreciates your cooperation with this program and continued support. General questions should be directed to Neptune Technologies Group at 1.800.667.4387.  For more information about the water meter replacement program, please see the information below.

New Water Meter Installation in Paris, St. George, Cainsville, Mount Pleasant, Oakhill

In Paris, approximately 95% of the new water meters have been installed in homes and businesses.  This project is ongoing. Overall, the project has gone smoothly and we truly appreciate your cooperation.

In St. George, new water meter installations began in the spring 2020 and was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  The program was able to resume in the summer 2020 with new health and safety precautions in place.

In Cainsville, Mount Pleasant and Oakhill, the program began in fall 2020.

Neptune Technology is the contracted partner who is installing the water meters. Installations will be occurring on an area by area basis.  As technicians move into your area, homeowners and business owners will receive communication from the County of Brant and Neptune prompting them to book an appointment.

Throughout the process, there will be a series of communications to residents and business owners including:

  • The first introductory letter (example) was mailed to all affected residents.
  • The second letter (example) invited all affected residents and business owners.
  • The trifold brochure will be delivered to each residence and it provides a reference number to call and book your appointment to install the new water meter. This will be delivered as technicians move into your area.
  • If you receive a door hanger, technicians are in your area and please book your appointment.

Frequently asked Questions

Why does the County of Brant need to replace the water meters?

The typical life of a water meter is up to 20 years old.  They eventually need to be replaced.  Also, advances in meter reading technology make it easier for both the homeowner and the County for the County to read the meter. Upgraded meters will be read from the street rather than accessing the homeowner’s property.

Who is installing the new water meters?

Neptune Technology Group has been contracted on behalf of the County of Brant to install the new water meters.

Is there a cost to installing the new water meters?

No.  There is no cost for the water meter or the installation process.  No one will request any financial information from you.

When are the water meter installations happening?

In Paris, approximately 95% of the new water meters have been installed in homes and businesses.  This project is ongoing. Overall, the project has gone smoothly and we truly appreciate your cooperation.

In St. George, new water meter installations began in the spring 2020 and was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  The program was able to resume in the summer 2020 with new health and safety precautions in place.

In Cainsville, Mount Pleasant and Oakhill, the program began in fall 2020.

Is it mandatory to have the water meter installed?

Yes.  The County of Brant Council passed Bylaw 73-19 that requires the homeowner to comply with the water meter upgrades.  Several attempts will be made to contact and communicate with the homeowner to arrange a time to install the new water meters.  If the homeowner refuses, they may be subject to a fine and/or termination of water services.  We want to ensure this does not happen to any homeowner. If you have concerns, please contact the County of Brant at 519.449.2451.

 Where is my water meter?
Water meters are usually located near your shut-off valve in the basement or crawl space. Sometimes they are near your hot water tank.
How long does it take to install the new water meter?

It will take approximately 30 – 90 minutes to install the new water meter.

Will I be without water when my water meter is being installed?
Yes. Your water will be shut off for approximately 30 – 90 minutes during the installation process.

How do I verify the person at my door is a County of Brant or Neptune employee?

If in doubt, there are three ways to validate a County of Brant and/or Neptune employee including:

  • A Neptune technician is uniformed and carries identification, including name, picture and ID number
  • Contact Neptune Call Centre at 1.800.667.4387
  • Contact the County of Brant at 519.449.2451

Do I need to be home during the appointment?

An adult, at least 18 years of age, must be home for the entire appointment.

Is there more information specifically about the water meters?

Yes!  Please review the Automated Meter Reading Frequently Asked Questions document.

Protect Yourself from Scams!

Always protect yourself from scams.  Please note, the County of Brant has contracted Neptune Technology Group to install the new water meters.  The County of Brant and Neptune will not request any financial information from you. The water meter and installation are free of charge. If in doubt, call the County of Brant at 519.449.2451 or 519.44-BRANT.

If you have questions about the new water meter installation, please contact Clint Brown, Public Works Technologist, at the County of Brant at 519.449.2451 x 2211 or publicworks@brant.ca

Reading your Water Meter

On the face of your meter you should see numbers inside a rectangle. Similar to the odometer in a car, read the number from left to right including all zeroes at the front.

Leaks and Other Concerns

If your recorded water use changes suddenly for no obvious reason (lawn watering, more people in the home, away for a long period of time, etc.) contact Energy + Inc. so it can be investigated.

If you think you have a leak, turn off all water-consuming appliances inside and outside your home. Read your meter. If the test dial (red triangle) on your meter is spinning, water is flowing through the meter. You may also want to monitor your meter reads overnight. Take a reading before you go to bed and first thing in the morning before you use any water. If the numbers have changed, there may be a leak somewhere in your home. Remember, toilets are the number one cause of leaks.

Report leaks at the water meter right away to the County of Brant Water Division.
