As respiratory illness season approaches, Grand Erie Public Health is encouraging residents to protect themselves and their families by getting vaccinated against influenza, COVID-19 and, if eligible, Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV).
Beginning October 26, influenza and COVID-19 vaccines will be available for everyone six months of age and older at participating local pharmacies and healthcare providers. RSV vaccines are now available year-round through healthcare providers for adults 75 years and older, and high-risk individuals ages 60 to 74. Starting October 1, infants younger than eight months old who were born on or after April 1 are eligible for the infant RSV program.
To keep you and your loved ones protected, it is recommended you get your influenza vaccine and updated COVID-19 vaccine annually each fall. If you have already completed your initial COVID-19 series, it is recommended that you receive an updated dose in the fall if it has been at least 3 months since your last dose.
Influenza, COVID-19, and RSV are contagious respiratory illnesses that can be more serious than the common cold. These viruses can lead to severe health complications, particularly for people at higher risk, including young children, pregnant individuals, and older adults.
Respiratory viruses typically increase during the fall and winter months, leading to more illness, healthcare visits, and hospitalizations. Vaccination can help reduce the risk of severe illness and help protect those most vulnerable in our communities.
To help protect yourself and your family from respiratory illness:
-
Stay up to date with immunizations for recommended seasonal vaccines.
-
Stay home when you are sick.
-
Wear a mask that fits comfortably over your nose and mouth if you are feeling ill or are around others who may be ill.
-
Wash your hands and avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
-
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow when you cough or sneeze.
-
Clean surfaces that people touch often.
Vaccination remains safe, effective, and the best defense against influenza, COVID-19, and RSV. Influenza and COVID-19 vaccines can be administered at the same appointment, making it easier to stay protected.
To learn more about RSV vaccine eligibility, contact your healthcare provider.
Residents are encouraged to book their vaccination appointments early and talk with their healthcare provider about which vaccines are recommended for them.
