Update on the Municipal Airport Boundary Adjustment
The County of Brant and the City of Brantford have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) outlining draft terms for a municipal boundary adjustment involving the Brantford Municipal Airport and nearby lands. The proposed MOU was reached following negotiations with the County and City, facilitated by the Provincial Land and Development Facilitator.
The proposed boundary adjustment would bring the Brantford Municipal Airport and a surrounding land area into the City of Brantford, totalling approximately 1,317 acres.
Background
Negotiations began following the City of Brantford submitting a request under Section 174 of the Municipal Act to the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing. This request asked the Province to examine potential restructuring options for the Airport lands.
On March 11, 2026, the County of Brant received official communication from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing directing that negotiations begin between the two municipalities regarding a potential boundary adjustment for the Airport lands. County of Brant Council formally received this communication on March 24, 2026. The correspondence established a deadline of June 30, 2026, for both municipalities to reach an agreement.
While the County of Brant is disappointed by the manner in which this process was initiated and by the timelines that were enforced - particularly during an election year - County Council and staff have remained committed to negotiating in good faith while advocating for residents to the best of our extent within the parameters directed.
What’s next
While the MOU outlines proposed terms, additional steps are required, including public engagement, continued County-City discussions, statutory public hearings, and formal Council review of a final agreement.
Public Engagement
As the initiator of these discussions, the City of Brantford will lead public engagement for residents, landowners, business owners and other community members that have questions and/or would like to provide their feedback. Those directly impacted by the proposed adjustment will be contacted directly by City staff.
Public engagement will take place on the Let’s Talk Brantford website at LetsTalkBrantford.ca/Airport, as well as through in-person opportunities.
On the website the public will have access to the MOU, a map of the proposed boundary adjustment, background information, engagement tools and additional resources.
Two public open houses will take place:
- Thursday June 11, 2026 - 3:00-5:00 pm
- Thursday June 11, 2026 - 6:00-8:00 pm
Location: Walter Gretzky Municipal Golf Course, 320 Balmoral Drive, Brantford
Following public engagement County and City staff will review the feedback received. This information, along with another opportunity for public involvement will be presented through statutory public hearings held by both the County and the City. Details regarding these hearings will be shared as they become available.
If approved by both Councils, the agreement would be submitted to the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing for consideration of an order to implement the municipal boundary adjustment.
Thank you to County of Brant residents for your patience throughout this process. Council and staff have led negotiations with our residents’ best interest in mind and remained committed to achieving a fair and responsible outcome for our community.
