What is a pedestrian crossover?

A pedestrian crossover is a type of road crossing where drivers and cyclists must stop for pedestrians wanting to cross the road. By law, drivers and cyclists must stop and yield to pedestrians wanting to cross and wait for them to reach the other side completely before driving through the crossover. It is the responsibility of both drivers and pedestrians to understand and follow the rules of the road

Flashing lights at Pedestrian Crossings

Brant Safe Streets is a community initiative focused on reducing speeding and promoting safe driving. Initiatives are guided by studies and traffic data, as well as input from residents, to improve safety in key locations across Brant.

One of these initiatives is the installation of push button activated flashing lights at pedestrian crossovers (PXOs) on the roundabouts along Rest Acres Road. A Crossing Guard will be positioned at the Cobblestone Drive Roundabout before and after school to help everyone cross safely.

With your help, we can calm traffic and ensure everyone gets home safely.

For Pedestrians:

• Press the button to activate the flashing lights.
• Wait until traffic has stopped.
• Make eye contact with drivers before stepping onto the road.
• Allow traffic time to come to a full stop before entering the roadway

For Drivers:

• Slow down as you approach a roundabout
• Be alert for pedestrians at PXOs at all times.
• Stop when the lights are flashing and a pedestrian is waiting to cross.
• Remain stopped until the pedestrian has completely crossed to the other side.
• It is the law to yield to pedestrians at designated pedestrian crossovers - failure to do so can result in fines and demerit points.
