Roundabouts

Roundabouts are increasingly common in Ontario and the County of Brant, enhancing safety by slowing traffic and reducing high-risk accidents. They manage heavy traffic volumes efficiently and cut down on pollution by reducing stops and idling.

A roundabout is where roads meet in a circle, with traffic moving counterclockwise around a central island. Whether single or multiple lanes, roundabouts require drivers to slow down and pay attention to signage for safe navigation.

Before entering:

  • Choose the correct lane based on your exit
  • Yield to traffic already in the roundabout
  • Enter when safe, staying in your lane

Inside the Roundabout:

  • Keep to your lane and signal before exiting
  • Stop for pedestrians and cyclists at Pedestrian crossovers (PXOs)
  • Do not change lanes or overtake vehicles within the roundabout

Safety comes first, and crossing should only happen when it's safe.

  • Cross at crosswalks, looking for a safe traffic gap
  • Make eye contact with drivers to ensure they stop
  • Pedestrian crossovers (PXOs) require traffic to stop for pedestrians
  • Uncontrolled crossings require pedestrians to yield to traffic

Safety comes first, and crossing should only happen when it's safe.

  • If on the sidewalk or trail, dismount and walk your bike
  • Pedestrian crossovers (PXOs) require traffic to stop for cyclists
  • Uncontrolled crossings require cyclists to yield to traffic
  • If on the road, signal and merge into traffic, following vehicle rules

If you haven't entered the roundabout, pull over for emergency vehicles. If already inside the roundabout, exit and then pull over.

Give large vehicles like trucks and farm equipment extra space—they may need both lanes to navigate.

Pay attention

Not all roundabouts are the same. Follow specific signage and pavement markings at each roundabout intersection.
