2026 Gravel To Hardtop and Surface Treatment
Gravel to hardtop and surface treatment will begin this week. The work will happen throughout the summer on various roads.
What and why?
- Surface treatment (tar and chip/high float) is an economical way to create a hard surfaced road to minimize dust and maintenance on low volume roads (under 1,000 vehicles a day). It also protects the road base from water infiltration and potential damage that it creates. The process involves preparing a gravel base, applying an asphalt emulsion (tar) followed by aggregate (stone chip) and machine rolling to compact the road surface. Surface treatment can be applied as single surface treatment to an existing surface treated road, or as double surface treatment to fresh gravel applied over two years.
Where is surface treatment or resurfacing happening?
- Mill Street – Robinson Road to Henderson Road
- Douglas Street – Mill Street to west end turnaround
- Wetmores Road – Pleasant Ridge Road to Mount Pleasant Road
- Kitchen School Road – Governors Road East to German School Road
- James Lawrence Street – Highway 54 to Hager Street
- Hager Street – James Lawrence Street to Youell Street
- Youell Street –Highway 54 to Hager Street
- Solomon Street –Highway 54 to Hager Street
When?
- Monday, May 25, 2026, to Friday, August 28, 2026
Changes during resurfacing period?
- Intersection impacts: May be controlled by flaggers while work occurs.
- Road impacts: The road will be controlled by flaggers to a single lane while work occurs. Once completed, the new surface needs time to allow the aggregate to set as traffic drives over it. Loose stone from the process will be removed 3 to 4 weeks later.
- Access (personal driveways, services or amenities): While all driveways will be accessible, expect delays within construction zones.
- Garbage/Recycling Collection: Will be maintained as scheduled.
Contractor:
- Cornell Construction
