Heat alert issued for Brant starting June 30, 2026
The Medical Officer of Health (MOH) for Grand Erie Public Health is issuing a heat alert for the Grand Erie Public Health region (Brantford‑Brant and Haldimand‑Norfolk), effective Tuesday, June 30, 2026.
A heat alert is issued by the MOH when Environment and Climate Change Canada issues a yellow‑level heat alert for the region, indicating that conditions may pose health risks for some individuals. Typically, these alerts are issued when Environment and Climate Change Canada forecasts two or more consecutive days with:
- Daytime high temperatures of 31°C or greater and minimum overnight temperatures of 20°C or greater, or
- Humidex values of 40°C or greater.
The heat alert will remain in effect until a cancellation notice is issued.
Hot and humid weather can increase the risk of heat‑related illness for everyone, particularly older adults, infants and young children, people with chronic health conditions, people who work or exercise outdoors, individuals experiencing homelessness, and those without access to air‑conditioned spaces.
Extreme heat can worsen existing health conditions and may lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Warning signs of heat‑related illness include dizziness, headache, nausea or vomiting, weakness, confusion, fainting, and rapid breathing or heartbeat. Seek immediate medical attention if these symptoms occur.
To reduce the risk of heat‑related illness:
- Drink plenty of water and other non‑alcoholic, non‑caffeinated fluids.
- Spend time in air‑conditioned or cool spaces whenever possible.
- Take cool showers or baths to help lower body temperature.
- Limit outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day.
- Wear lightweight, loose‑fitting, light‑coloured clothing and a wide‑brimmed hat when outdoors.
- Check on older adults, neighbours, family members, and others who may be more vulnerable during extreme heat.
- Never leave children or pets unattended in parked vehicles.
