Basement Flood Prevention Assistance Program

The Basement Flood Prevention Assistance Program offers reimbursement for the cost of outfitting your home to prevent stormwater from flooding your basement. You may be eligible for a lifetime maximum of up to $5,000 per property.

Please note, the County of Brant has allocated funding towards this program and funding is based on first come, first serve. Annual funding would be considered through future annual budget processes.

 

Program Eligibility

Am I eligible for the grant program?

  • You must be the owner of a residential dwelling within the County of Brant, and
  • Provide proof of house insurance claim for basement flooding incident, or other documentation deemed acceptable by County Staff
  • House cannot be under a new construction warranty
  • Property owner must not have outstanding property taxes payments at the time of the application
  • Home was built before January 1, 2012
  • Home is connected to the County stormwater system

If you meet all these eligibility criteria, please proceed to the application form.

  • Disconnection of foundation drains and/or downspouts from the storm sewer connection
  • Installation of a backwater valve on stormwater service connection
  • Installation of a sump pit and pump with battery backup that discharges to ground surface (Not eligible for upgrade or replacement of sump pump system)
  • Altering driveway entrances to reduce overland flow to the base of the driveway if the driveway on your property is below the grade of the street, and a catch basin and gravity connection to the storm sewer are located at the base of the driveway to capture and convey water to the storm sewer

  • Maximum $5,000 lifetime per property
  • 50% up to $500 towards disconnection of downspouts from the storm systems
  • 50% up to $3,000 towards installing backwater valve on stormwater service connection
  • 50% up to $5,000 installing a sump pit and pump with battery backup that discharges to ground surface and connecting foundation drains to sump pit
  • 50% up to $2,000 for eligible driveway entrance improvements and backwater valve installation on private catch basin storm sewer connection

Application Process and Checklist

If you are eligible (as noted in the above information):

  • Complete the online Application Form, attach the Contractor’s Estimate and the proof of house insurance claim for basement flooding incident
  • The Contractor’s Estimate must detail the work to be completed including all costs. Attach an image of the estimate to this form.
  • You will be notified by the County of Brant advising if your grant application has been approved or denied. If denied, you will be advised of the reason.

If you are approved:

  • Arrange for a qualified contractor to perform the approved work within six months of receiving notification of the grant approval.
  • Submit a copy of the paid invoice and photos of the approved and completed work to the County of Brant by emailing operations@brant.ca within six months of receiving notification of the grant approval.
