Camp Phoenix Celebrates Five Years of Inspiring Future Women Firefighters

The County of Brant Fire Department proudly celebrated the fifth anniversary of Camp Phoenix, a free, immersive firefighting camp for young women ages 14 to 18, designed to inspire and empower young women interested in pursuing careers in the fire service.

From July 22 to 26, 19 participants took part in five days of challenging, hands-on training that provided an authentic look at the skills, teamwork, and dedication required of today's firefighters.

Scenarios included auto extrication, live fire simulations, search and rescue operations, forcible entry and various firefighting skills. Working alongside experienced firefighters and instructors, participants developed confidence, leadership, problem solving abilities, and practical emergency response skills.

"Celebrating five years of Camp Phoenix is an incredible milestone for our department,” said Cindy Stevenson, General Manager of Emergency and Protective Services, "Over the past five years, we've had the privilege of watching so many inspiring young women step outside their comfort zones, challenge themselves, and discover what's possible. Their determination, resilience, and willingness to take on every new challenge has been remarkable to witness.”

One of the highlights of this year's camp was the use of the Office of the Fire Marshal's Mobile Live Fire Training Unit. The training unit allowed campers to spend three days completing live search and rescue training and defensive firefighting exercises in a realistic, controlled environment- an opportunity that was new to camp this year.

Since its inaugural year in 2022, Camp Phoenix has introduced nearly 100 young women to the fire service while encouraging leadership, resilience, teamwork, and personal growth. The program continues to break down barriers and create opportunities for the next generation of firefighters.

The County of Brant Fire Department extends its sincere appreciation to the many firefighters, instructors, volunteers, and community supporters who dedicated their time and expertise to making this year's camp a success. Special thanks are also extended to the Office of the Fire Marshal and Ontario Fire College for bringing the Mobile Live Fire Training Unit to the County of Brant, providing campers with an exceptional training experience.

Camp Phoenix concluded with a graduation ceremony on Sunday, recognizing the achievements of all 19 participants and celebrating the successful completion of another memorable year.
